Podiatry is a branch of medicine covering the diagnosis, study and treatment of the foot, ankle and lower leg.
The term podiatry originated in the US where it now refers to a Doctor of Podiatric medicine who is qualified to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the feet. Surgery, biomechanics, geriatrics, and sports medicine are specialist branches of Podiatry. In English speaking countries podiatry is known as chiropody and is practiced by chiropodists but the jobs are very similar with minor differences. Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition affecting the thick fibrous tissues that begin at the heel bone and continue along the sole of the foot towards the toes known as the plantar fascia. This condition which is usually caused by long hours of standing related to occupation is said to affect nearly two million Americans. It is thought to affect over two million Americans. The condition which starts with a pain in the heel is usually more intense when taking the first steps in the morning. Another symptom of plantar fasciitis is that the sufferer has difficulty bending the foot so that the toes are bent upwards towards the shin which restricts movement in the ankle. The condition also increases the likelihood of pains in the knees mainly amongst runners but not just runners. The podiatrist will often study the way a person stands and walks before making his prognosis and treatment will generally involve stretching, special shoes, rest and may require the use of corticosteroid drugs in more painful cases. Medial tibial stress syndrome is the formal term for shin splints which is a painful condition in the shins.
It can occur when jumping, sprinting and running. One cause of the condition is overuse of one muscle which can occur in athletes specialising in a particular activity and putting too much stress on the shins. If the condition is untreated it can lead to a stress fracture. Such a condition is usually diagnosed by the symptoms involving pain during exercise which is gradually worsening as exercise continues rather than easing up as the muscles get warmer. Anti-inflammatory drugs, rest, and the use of cold compresses are the usual treatment for this. Barefoot running is little practised today though there are some famous athletes, like Zola Budd, who were renowned for it. With the advances in running shoes design the general belief is that wearing shoes is more beneficial than running barefoot. When running barefoot, the emphasis is based on the balls of the feet whereas the emphasis is changed to the heel and the area around the back of the heel when wearing running shoes. It has been argued that wearing running shoes with the stress on the heels may cause repetitive stress problems but barefoot running is thought to be healthier because the weight distribution is more evenly spread.
There is no concrete evidence as to which is better though most sports authorities recommend that running shoes be worn.

This name originated in the USA and refers to a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine who is qualified to diagnose and treat problems affecting the feet. There are specialist branches of podiatry such as surgery, biomechanics, geriatrics, sports medicine etc. In many countries podiatry is still known as chiropody, and the practitioners as chiropodists and though there are some variations the two are generally the same. Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition in the plantar fascia which is a thick fibrous mass of tissue that starts at th heel bone, continues along the sole of the foot towards the toes. This condition which is usually caused by long hours of standing related to occupation is said to affect nearly two million Americans. It can also be caused by too much weight constantly bearing down on the feet. The condition starts with a pain in the heel which gets stronger, rather than eases, when the muscles are warmed up, but is more intense in the mornings when taking the first steps. Another symptom of the condition is that the patient has difficulty bending the foot so that the toes are bent up towards the shin thus restricting ankle movement. It can also increase the likelihood of pains in the knees particularly among runners but not confined to them. A podiatrist will usually examine the foot and how a patient stands and walks before deciding on a diagnosis and recommend treatment such as resting, stretching or wearing special shoes and in some cases will recommend taking corticosteroids. Medial tibial stress syndrome is the formal name for a painful condition of the shins known as shin splints.
It can occur when jumping, sprinting and running. One cause of the condition is overuse of one muscle which can occur in athletes specialising in a particular activity and putting too much stress on the shins. Such a condition is usually diagnosed by the symptoms involving pain during exercise which is gradually worsening as exercise continues rather than easing up as the muscles get warmer. Cold compresses, rest, and anti-inflammatory drugs may be recommended by the podiatrist to relieve such pain. Barefoot running is not the norm in modern times though famous athletes such as Zola Budd were well known for it. When running barefoot, the emphasis is based on the balls of the feet whereas the emphasis is changed to the heel and the area around the back of the heel when wearing running shoes. It has been repetitively proved that wearing shoes is very important for the heel.
Barefoot running tends to spread the weight on the foot more equally. Sports authorities tend to favor running shoes but there is no hard evidence to suggest which is really better.
